The Governor Who Became Vice President
On Tuesday, September 9, 2025, NDA candidate and former Governor of Maharashtra, C.P. Radhakrishnan was elected as the 14th Vice President of India. He gave the Joint Opposition candidate, former Supreme Court Judge B.K. Defeated Sudarsen Reddy comfortably.
Radhakrishnan, a member of the two-task of Lok Sabha from Coimbatore, was serving as Maharashtra Governor before his election. He was named as its candidate by the ruling NDA alliance on 17 August.
The number was definitely in his favor, Radhakrishnan secured 452 votes against Reddy’s 300. While his victory was not surprising for many people, it highlighted some interesting dynamics.
The final vote count revealed that some opposition MPs were engaged in cross-voting. Joint candidate of opposition, b. Sudarson Reddy, Telugu leader from South, was placed as a fight for ideologies.
Radhakrishnan’s victory is seen by the BJP as a strategic move to strengthen its presence in southern India, especially in Tamil Nadu, which is ready to hold an election next year.
As a lifetime loyalty, who started his political career with the RSS, is seen as a reliable option. He is also from the Gounder-Kaugo Valalar community, an OBC (Other Backward Classes) group. Radhakrishnan is now the third leader of Tamil Nadu to hold the post of Vice President.
